Wine Reviews: Northeast Italy

I’m changing things up with a brief trek across some wine regions of Northeast Italy.

First off: I love wines from the Friuli appellation of Collio. I find the best to be super fresh, mineral-driven, spicy, brisk, and there’s a ton of value to find here.

And the Felluga family of Friuli has some solid offerings in this tasting. The Russiz Superiore wines, located in the Collio municipality of Capriva del Friuli, are exciting and delicious wines, and great examples of what I like about this region.

I also tasted some wines from Scaia (the second label of Veneto producer Tenuta Sant’Antonio). They produce a pair of value-driven, accessible wines with broad appeal and light price points.

These wines were received as trade samples and tasted sighted.

2018 Russiz Superiore Collio SauvignonItaly, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
SRP: $29
Deep yellow color. Lovely aromas of gooseberry, green melon and limes, with hay, wildflowers, nettle and chalk dust elements. Crisp and bright on the palate but gorgeous depth; there’s this waxy yet smooth yet zippy feel. Green apples, lemon-limes, apricot, crunchy and tart fruit with honey, candle wax, white tea. I get notes of chalk dust, mountain stream and minerals. Complex and vibrant, this would be great with so many types of foods. (90 points IJB)

2016 Russiz Superiore Collio Cabernet FrancItaly, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
SRP: $29thumbnail (1)
Deep ruby color. I get waves of black cherries, bold plums and blueberries, with lots of smoky, earthy, charcoal, anise and mesquite notes. Medium+ bodied with serious grip to the tannins and bright acidity throughout; the balance is impressive on this young wine, though. Black cherries and plums, the fruit is dark and crunchy, mixed well with complex notes of anise, incense sticks, menthol, scorched earth, black pepper glaze, dried leaves. Super spicy but balanced and pleasant as well. Young and dry but this should do wonders in the cellar. Fermented in stainless steel and aged 12 months in oak. (90 points IJB)

2015 Marco Felluga Collio Molamatta BiancoItaly, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Collio
SRP: $26
Medium yellow color. I love the rich and juicy nose of pineapple, lemon crème, notes of almond, hay, daisies, whipped butter and honeycomb. Medium+ bodied with a delightfully creamy texture, a bold presence on the palate, but the focus and crisp acidity are pristine. Honeydew melon, yellow apples, the fruit is topped in ginger, toasted almond, honeycomb, crushed shells and chalk dusty. Juicy but clean and precision – a blend of Pinot Bianco, Tocai Friulano and Ribolla Gialla, fermented in a mix of stainless steel and oak barrels. (89 points IJB)

2018 Tenuta Sant’Antonio Scaia Garganega/ChardonnayItaly, Trevenezie
SRP: $14
Medium yellow color. Nose shows green apples, lemon, kiwi, with white tea and dandelion. Medium-=bodied with a bright presence and tangy acidity, with tart fruit (green apple, lime, kiwi). I get notes of honeysuckle, mint, white pepper. Fun, fresh, summer-friendly stuff at a good price. 55% Garganega, 45% Chardonnay. (86 points IJB)

2018 Tenuta Sant’Antonio Scaia Rosato Veneto IGTItaly, Veneto, Veneto IGT
SRP: $14
Pale copper color. Aromas of spicy white pepper, rosewater, white cherries and nettle. Crisp and bright with a steely, tangy feel, and some white cherries and crunchy red apples. Notes of rose hips, white pepper, honeysuckle. Fun, steely, brisk, light and spicy stuff. Made from 100% Rondinella. (86 points IJB)

2018 Riff Pinot GrigioItaly, Delle Venezie
SRP: $10
Pale yellow color. Lots of peaches and honeysuckle on the nose, with some mint and green melon. Juicy and fresh on a medium/light-bodied frame. Steely, bright with white flowers, perfume and whipped honey notes. A lot more texture and flavor than a lot of Pinot Grigios at this price point. Imported exclusively by Dalla Terra Winery, this is made by Alois Lageder. (85 points IJB)

  1. I really like the Scaia wines, but just for people’s knowledge, they all have 10 grams/Liter residual sugar.
